Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a well cost?
A donation of $12,000 fully funds the process of drilling and setting up a well. The cost may differ depending on the country, terrain, availability of supplies, and the location of the well, but this amount guarantees that a community in need gains access to clean, life-saving water.
Can I fund an entire well?
Yes! Many donors and churches have chosen to sponsor a whole well, often in honor or remembrance of someone they love. This enduring act of kindness changes lives for years to come. If you are interested in funding a well, we would be delighted to partner with you to make a lasting difference.
What if I can’t make a big donation?
Your gift, no matter the size, makes a difference. There is an African proverb that says, “It takes a village to raise a child,” it also takes a village to fulfill our mission! Your support is what allows us to bring life-changing water, sanitation, public health and hygiene education to families in need. You can also consider making a monthly donation to increase your impact over the course of a year. By giving monthly, you provide consistent support that allows us to effectively budget and sustain our mission. Partnering with us through regular monthly gifts empowers us to bring hope to the world and make a lasting impact!
How do I know my donation is making a difference?
We prioritize transparency and accountability in all our efforts. We invite donors to follow our progress on Facebook, our website, and through our quarterly newsletters and, when possible, visit our project sites to see the transformative effects of their contributions firsthand.
How do you choose the locations for the wells?
In each country, our partners collaborate closely with community leaders, churches, and government officials to pinpoint the areas with the most urgent needs. Sometimes this is a whole village, other times it is an orphanage or school that risks closure without a source of clean water.
Do you have plans to drill wells in any other countries?
Our primary focus in this season continues to be on rural regions in Ethiopia, Guatemala, and Kenya. The demand for clean water in these areas is great, and our partners on the ground ensure that our work meets immediate needs and has a lasting impact.
Do you provide water in the United States?
While we do not drill wells in the United States, we do sell bottled water in Texas and the surrounding states. 100% of our profits support the mission of Hope Springs Water to bring HOPE to the world through clean water, improved sanitation, public health and hygiene education. How many water projects has Hope Springs Water completed?
As of the end of 2024, Hope Springs Water has completed 155 water projects. In 2025, our goal is to drill one well every month to bring clean, life-saving water to approximately 3,500 people.
Do you own drilling rigs, and does Hope Springs Water physically drill the wells?
Our partner organizations in Ethiopia and Guatemala own drilling rigs and we send teams to these countries throughout the year to drill wells alongside our partners. In Kenya, Hope Springs Water raises funds and our in-country partner, Pastor Moses, collaborates with experienced drilling companies to install wells. By working with partner organizations and skilled professionals, we ensure that we reach the most vulnerable communities and meet their needs effectively.
Can I help to drill a well?
Yes! We send volunteer teams to our areas of operation throughout the year to help with well drilling and hygiene education. Experiencing the impact of clean water firsthand offers a meaningful way to connect with our mission and witness the positive change your support brings. View our Trip Schedule to learn more!
How long does it take to establish a well?
The timeframe can vary depending on the location and terrain, but the entire process, including the preliminary planning and final water tests, typically takes about two months. The actual drilling and installation of the pump, casing, and concrete surrounding the pump usually takes two weeks.
Do you use solar pumps on wells?
Although we have installed some solar pumps, we prefer to install them only if the community requests them. In rural communities in the developing world, scarce replacement parts, expensive repairs, and unreliable quality make solar pumps less practical for long-term use. We prefer to focus on AFRIDEV hand-pumps that are simpler to maintain and repair using locally available resources.
How long does a well last?
A well that is properly built and maintained can remain functional for many years, with the pump lasting at least 5-10 years. We use high quality materials to guarantee durability and provide training on well maintenance and repair in each community we work in to ensure the sustainability of each well.
Who provides maintenance on the wells?
We believe that community stewardship is essential for long-term sustainability. When a well is finished, the community takes charge of its ongoing maintenance. The training we provide equips and empowers community members to maintain the well.
How many people benefit from a well?
The number of people served depends on the village’s population. Our goal is that each well we drill serves a community of 350 – 400 individuals, and is located close to a health clinic, school, or government facility to benefit as many people as possible.
How does access to clean water benefit communities?
Unclean water threatens health and perpetuates the cycle of poverty in struggling communities. Having access to a source of clean water transforms lives through:
- Improved Education: In developing countries, women and children in rural areas can spend an average of 4-6 hours each day fetching drinking water from sources far from home. When their village receives a well, children don’t have to travel far to collect water and can spend more time in school.
- Economic Advancement: With water readily available, women can invest more time in income-generating activities instead of daily water collection.
- Better Health: Preventable waterborne illnesses like typhoid and cholera claim hundreds of thousands of lives every year. Having a safe, clean source of drinking water lowers the risk of illness and saves lives.
Why does this matter?
At Hope Springs Water, we believe that all people deserve a life lived in health and dignity, but poor water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions put this at risk. In many parts of the developing world, access to clean water remains a critical necessity. Supporting clean water initiatives means reducing the spread of waterborne illnesses, increasing school attendance, and empowering communities to thrive. Every well renews hope and offers the promise of a better future for families in need.
