Adding a new roof and well in Nicaragua

When you give to Hope Springs Water, you help the Maynaga and Miskito people of Nicaragua.

In 2007, the category 5 hurricane Felix slammed into the Miskito Coast of Nicaragua. Members of First Baptist Church, Athens had just met missionaries Jim and Viola Palmer who had returned to the US after serving for 30 years in central America and the last of these years spent building a thriving church planting ministry on that stricken coast line.

The Church’s first response was to help with hurricane recovery and to rebuild homes of pastors in the coastal and inland villages. After those beginning steps in service, more opportunities to help came their way.

First Baptist Church began working with Jim Palmer and the people of Nicaragua to start new churches using the humanitarian tools of water wells, hygiene education, lumber milling, medical clinics, optical clinics, Vacation Bible Schools and work with abused women and girls in crisis.

In January 2020, a team from FBCA traveled to the mining town of Rosita where the NICA Team and Hope Springs Water share a ministry compound that is the center of our work in the region. It is at this facility that newly appointed missionaries, Peter and Melissa Merrell, with their children will become the new ministry leaders. The FBCA team accomplished two tasks that week. First, to remove the old, leaky metal roof from the Merrill's new home and replace it with a wonderful new roof. Second, to drilled a Hope Springs Water well at the Baptist Church in the neighboring town of Bonanza to benefit the people living all around the church.

Brother Thomas, the pastor of the Baptist Church in Bonanza, gave thanks for the church in Athens who has joined with them in their mission to bring clean water and the knowledge of Christ to the remote and overlooked people of Nicaragua.

Steve Akin said, “I am constantly humbled to see how God will use simple people like you and me, and a small church in East Texas to accomplish his awesome and eternal work in countries so far away.” The Bible says, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people.” Galatians 6:9-10

I hope we will never give up “doing good.” Thanks for your gifts that make this work possible.
